The emergence of the genre known as 'New Age' in the mid-1980's was simply the latest version of what was once known as 'background music', or music to set a mood rather than to be consciously listened to. This concept was further developed as Ambient music, which may rely as much on synthesizers as traditional instruments such as flutes or strings. Even recordings of whale or bird songs have proven to be popular, along with ambient nature sounds like forests, marshes or shorelines of isolated lakes.
The human voice also is used in such meditative music, from Gregorian chants to Buddhist monks or Bulgarian women's choirs. Even typical pop or rock recordings from artists such as Enya, Brian Eno, and Loreena McKennitt, can be found in many yoga studios. The traditional sound of India, as represented by the master of the sitar, Ravi Shankar, is always a favorite. The history of music, from Krishna playing the flute to Vangelis, is a reflection of how well it can have a beneficial influence, especially when used to establish an atmosphere for contemplation and raising awareness.
