Probably no single subject has been as divisive in the history of Humanity as Religion. While great conflict has arisen from the desire for land or power or resources, or just fear of another group, fighting for one's beliefs or against the beliefs of others has propelled us through the centuries. And yet religion by its very nature is an attempt to reach beyond the world around us, to glimpse a higher reality, to search for a spark of the divine. Such is the nature of religion that it unites many of us in hope for a life after death, but divides us bitterly over the method or the message that could lead us there.
Around the globe, millions of people pray, chant, meditate or ponder over the possibility of seeking eternal truths, communicating directly with a creator, or organizing their life around what they feel must be true. Many are iron-clad in what they believe. Many have doubts at times, and many simply reject the notion altogether. Religion has been a dominant force in the shaping of nearly every culture we know of. It appears to continue to be so, even as more people than ever before start to wonder if we might be our own gods.
