Current interest in alternative therapies can be traced back to the idea that illness can sometimes have more than a direct physical cause. In a more holistic approach, one would need to consider the mind and the effect of consciousness upon the entire system of the body. Of course, for functional impairment that is obviously a result of accident, injury or other external causes, such as a broken bone or cut, our system of modern medicine plays an important part. But with illnesses such as depression, chronic aches and pains, or even the common cold, other methods of treatment may be just as effective, if not more so.

Yoga addresses the body, mind and spirit of the individual, and provides a method to cleanse and purify the body, stabilizing the mind and promoting good health. The use of asanas (postures) creates strength and flexibility, and removes toxins. Nutrition is also an important part of yoga, ensuring that physical needs are met, and the bodily systems are not clogged with food that impairs proper functioning. The use of meditation and breathing techniques to calm and focus the mind can also create improvements in a sense of well-being. Certainly in today's world, the need to reduce stress can have important consequences for us all.
