If you are a beginner to yoga, you may be wondering, exactly how do you start?. As with any physical regimen, from walking to kickboxing, you start by deciding what you want to do, and what you expect to get out of it. You may want to take up yoga for peace of mind, or to build up your body, to lose weight, or explore higher levels of consciousness. Whatever your reason(s), you should find a way to learn based upon your goals. In many areas, yoga classes are available. Some time should be spent investigating what these classes have to offer. Speak to the instructors regarding your aims and see if they can help you achieve them. If there are no classes near you that may be compatable, you may need to use videos or books to instruct you. Again, make sure you research what's available to meet your needs.
Once you decided on a class or other method of instruction, you will need clothing that is comfortable and 'breathable', not restricting you. This may be a leotard, or shorts and a t-shirt, whatever feels good to you. A yoga mat will help in letting you establish some space, and may offer some cushion for your bottom and knees rather than just the floor alone. If you are taking yoga classes, they may supply mats for free or a small rental fee. It's best to find out beforehand if you need to bring one or not. The most important thing is to enjoy the process; nothing discourages a beginner more than feeling like the session is drudgery. Yoga can bring you great feelings of satisfaction, contentment and awareness. Approach it with an open mind and you can take away a whole new outlook on life.
